As I pass by the nearby park, I heard the voices of energetic girls.  When I entered the park, high school cheerleaders wore uniforms and practiced as a demonstration.  There are a lot of people around them even though it’s hot.  A big applause will occur after each performance.  I forgot about the heat, and before I knew it, I gazed into the acting.  At one time, I often heard the word “cheer girl “, but this is Japanese English, and in the United States, the word “cheer girl ” is not used.  Recently, the word don’t have been used even in Japan anymore.  The words “cheer girl” and “cheer boy” are recognized as obscene words in English.  That’s why the term “cheerleader” is used in the United States.  “Cheer” means “to cheer up and cheer”, “leader” means “leader”, and Cheerleader means “leader to cheer the audience”.  It does not mean “captain in the cheerleader”, but everyone who does cheerleading is a cheerleader.  By the way, “cheerleading” is the name of the sport.  Cheerleading is more than sports !!

近くの公園を通りかかると、元気のいい女の子達の声が聞こえてきます。公園に入って見ると、高校生のチアリーダー達が揃いのユニフォームを着て実演を兼ねた練習をしています。周りにはこの暑いのに大勢の人だかりです。演技が終わる毎に大きな拍手が沸き起こります。暑さも忘れ、いつの間にか演技に見入っていました。ひと頃は「チアガール」という言葉をよく耳にしましたが、これは和製英語で、アメリカでは、「チアガール」という言葉を使いません。最近は、日本でも使わなくなってきましたが。「チアガール」や「チアボーイ」という言葉は、英語では卑猥（ひわい）な言葉として認識されています。そのため、アメリカでは、 「チアリーダー（cheerleader）」という言葉が使われています。”cheer”は「元気付ける、応援する」という意味で、”leader”は「導く人」という意味、よって、Cheerleaderは、「観客の応援をリードする人」という意味です。「チアガールの中の、キャプテン」という意味ではなく、チアリーディングをする全員がチアリーダーなのです。ちなみに、「チアリーディング」は、そのスポーツの名称です。Cheerleading is more than sports!!
