On March 2nd, Haruichiban(the first spring blew) in Kinki for the first time in three years.  It’s already blown on February 4th in Kanto, so Kinki is a month late.  It seems that Haruichiban in Kanto is the fastest record to update the record of February 5, 1988.  By breaking the record again, I have a feeling of the chaos of the weather this year.  The definition of Haruichiban is different in each region, and in Kinki, it is said that a southerly wind with a maximum wind speed of 8 meters or more blows between Risshun(the beginning of spring, around February 4) and Shunbun(the equinox, around March 21).  Spring scenery can be seen everywhere in Kanto and Kansai without waiting for Haruichiban , so the weather and everything is unpredictable by preconceived ideas.

３月２日近畿では三年振りで春一番が吹きました。関東ではもうすでに２月４日に吹いていますので一ヶ月遅れということになります。関東の春一番はこれまでの記録1988年の2月5日を１日更新する最速記録だそうです。またもや記録破りということで、今年の気象の波乱を予感させます。春一番の定義は地方で異なり、近畿では立春（2月4日ごろ）から春分（3月21日ごろ）の間に最大風速8メートル以上の南寄りの風が吹くことなどとされています。関東も関西も春一番を待つことなく、春景色はもう至るところで見受けられていますので、気象も何もかもが既成概念では予測の立たないことばかりです。

Kanhi-zakura is in full bloom.  It is also called “Shogatsu-zakura(New Year’s cherry blossoms)” because it begins to bloom around the New Year of the lunar calendar.  The flowers are single-flowered in the middle, and bloom in a half-open shape that looks like a bell-shaped flower that closes downward, so it is also called “bell flower Sakuraka” in China.  “Kawazu Sakura”, which is famous for its early blooming cherry blossoms, was created by crossing this Kanhi-zakura with the wild Japanese Oshima-zakura.  Kanhi-zakura is a southern cherry blossom, and Hanami(the cherry-blossom viewing) in Okinawa means to appreciate this Kan-hi-zakura.  The “Sakura Front” begins to move north when Kanhi-zakura becomes a leaf cherry tree.

カンヒザクラが満開です。旧暦の正月あたりに咲き始めることから「正月桜」とも呼ばれます。花は中輪の一重咲きで、釣り鐘状の下向きに閉じたような半開きの形で咲くので、中国では「鐘花櫻花」とも呼びます。早咲き桜て有名な「河津桜」はこのカンヒザクラと日本の野生種のオオシマザクラを交配してできました。カンヒザクラは南方系の桜で、沖縄で花見といえばこのカンヒザクラを鑑賞することをいいます。カンヒザクラが葉桜になる頃から「桜前線」が北上を始めます。

You can listen to “Hinamatsuri” written by Hachirou Satou and composed by Takayo Kawamura as many times as you like and regardless of age. It was made in 1936, but it seems to have been sung for a long time.  There are various houses that decorate the dolls and those that do not, but there are probably no people who do not listen to this song at this time.  If you listen to it, the image of that person’s Hinamatsuri will spring up.  Gender issues have been taken up recently, and women are being called for to improve their status.  Certainly there is such a fact, and it is a problem that needs to be improved.  However, on the other hand, this Hinamatsuri has been handed down from the Heian period, hoping for the healthy growth and happiness of girls, as it is said to be the festival of peaches.  I think that gender issues in Japan have a different aspect from gender issues in the West.

サトウハチロウ作詞、河村高陽作曲の「たのしいひなまつり」は何度聞いても、幾つになって聞いてもいい。1936年に作られたそうですが、もっと古くから歌われてきた様に思えます。雛人形を飾る家、飾らない家と様々ですが、この時期この歌を聞かない人はまあいないでしょう。聞けばその人その人の雛祭りのイメージが湧いてきます。昨今ジェンダー問題が取り上げられ、女性の地位向上が叫ばれています。確かにそういう事実があり、改善しなければならない問題です。しかし一方、この雛祭りは桃の節句と言われるように、女の子達の健やかな成長と幸せを願って平安時代の昔から引き継がられています。日本のジェンダー問題は外国のジェンダー問題とは違った側面があるように思います。

From March 1st to 14th, the main religious services of “Omizutori” will be working at Todaiji Nigatsudo.  Since it was held in February of the lunar calendar, it is called “Shuni-e” and its official name is “Juichimen-kela(Eleven-faced regret)”. It means to confess to the Eleven-faced Kanzeon Bosatsu, the principal deity of Nigatsudo, that we make  various mistakes in our daily lives. At midnight on March 12 (around 1:30 am on the 13th),  the ceremony called “Omizutori has been held every year from 752 to pump up “Okozui” to be offered to Kannon from a well called Wakasai.  This is the 1270th event that has been held, and in Kansai, we will start preparing for spring by saying, “Spring will come when the Omizutori is finished.”

３月１日から１４日までの間、東大寺二月堂において「お水取り」の本行が勤められます。旧暦二月に行われたので「修二会（しゅにえ）」といい、正式名称は「十一面悔過(じゅういちめんけか」と呼ばれる行事です。われわれが日常に犯しているさまざまな過ちを、二月堂の本尊である十一面観世音菩薩の前で、懺悔（さんげ）するという意味を持っています。行中の３月１２日深夜（13日の午前1時半頃）には、「お水取り」といって、若狭井（わかさい）という井戸から観音さまにお供えする「お香水（おこうずい）」を汲み上げる儀式が行われます。752年から毎年絶えることなく行われてきた行事で、今年で丁度1270回目を迎えます。関西では「お水取りが終わると春が来る」といって、春を迎える準備に取り掛かります。

Yayoi March begins with the Hinamatsuri.  Spring is about to begin.  It is a month when many people move with various thoughts, such as those who graduate, those who retire, those who transfer.  However, under the scourge of Corona, these ceremonies will be held in a different way this year.  Homestay, homework, teleconferencing, teleconferencing, all done in a way that avoids direct contact between people. The information society is realized in an ironic way.  The first quarter of the 21st century was full of natural disasters, economic crises, human rights abuses and abuse.  It’s similar to the beginning of the 20th century.  I hope that the 21st century will not follow the same history as the 20th century.

弥生３月は雛祭りで明けます。いよいよ春の幕開けです。卒業する人、退職する人、転勤する人、様々な思いで多くの人達が動く月です。しかしコロナ禍の今年は例年とは違った形で式典が催されることでしょう。ホームステイ、在宅ワーク、遠隔授業に遠隔会議、すべて人と人の直接的接触を避ける形態で事が運ばれます。情報化社会が皮肉な形で実現されています。21世紀の第一四半期は自然災害、経済危機、人権侵害と虐待に明け暮れた毎日でした。20世紀の幕開けと似ています。21世紀が今後20世紀と同じ歴史を辿らないことを願います。

February is over today.  It’s been two months in no time.  The epidemic of infection by the new coronavirus that has continued since last year has subsided a little, but the infection is still spreading worldwide. The pandemic caused by the Spanish flu 100 years ago took three years to settle, so it’s still unpredictable.  However, unlike those days, medical technology has improved and vaccine technology has advanced, so I think it will end sooner than when a Spanish flu had been widespread, and I would like to expect that.  At the “Lake Biwa Marathon” held today, Kengo Suzuki (25) won the new Japanese record of 2 hours 4 minutes 56 seconds.  Good news.  We want to get out of this depressed situation as soon as possible.

今日で２月もお終い。あっと言う間の２ヶ月です。昨年から続く新型コロナウイルスによる感染の流行は少し落ち着いてきましたが、世界的にはまだまだ感染拡大しています。100年前に起こったスペイン風邪によるパンデミックは収束するのに３年掛かったそうですから、まだまだ予断を許しません。しかし、当時とは違って医療技術も向上し、ワクチン技術も発達していますから、スペイン風邪の時よりも早く終息するとは思いますし、そう期待したいところです。今日行われた「びわ湖毎日マラソン」では、鈴木健吾（25）選手が2時間4分56秒の日本新記録で優勝しました。幸先の良いニュースです。１日も早くこの鬱屈した状況から抜け出たいものです。

In the Inatori district of Higashiizu Town, Shizuoka Prefecture, there is a custom of “Hina hanging decoration” that has been handed down since the Edo period.  Wishing for the healthy growth and good luck of the daughter, a handmade doll made by the mother and grandmother sewing pieces of cloth is hung on both ends of Hina decorations.  It is now widely known and many people come to see the “Hina hanging decoration”.  There will be a few venues for “Hinamatsuri decorations” in the town, but the highlight is the “Hinamatsuri decorations” at the Susanoo Shrine. The dolls and hanging decorations on the 108 steep stairs, combined with the torii gate in front of the stairs, will move people’s hearts.

静岡県東伊豆町の稲取地区には江戸時代から伝わる「雛のつるし飾り」の風習があります。娘の健やかな成長や良縁を願い、母親や祖母が布の切れ端を縫い合わせて作った手作りの人形を雛段飾りの両端へ吊るします。今では広く知られることになり、「雛のつるし飾り」を見る為に多くの人達が訪れます。町中に「雛のつるし飾り」の会場が設けられますが、圧巻は「素戔嗚神社」の「雛壇飾り」です。108段の急勾配の階段に飾られる雛人形と雛のつるし飾りは階段手前の鳥居と相まって、人の心を揺さぶります。

All 100-yen shops called Hyakkin or 100-yen shop have become firmly established, and have grown to become known as “100-yen culture.”  The total sales of 100-yen shops exceed 500 billion yen, which is close to 1/10 of the total sales of department stores (185 stores).  I was surprised that half of the second floor of a nearby supermarket is a 100-yen shop.  Most items such as daily necessities and stationery are available.  I’m curious about some surprising products and the cheaper products that I think is 100 yen, and I think this is also a factor that attracts customers.  When I’m looking for Hina dolls corner because it is just the time, cute goods are lined up all over the place.  By the way, Daiso, a major 100-yen shop, has 125 stores overseas.

百均とか100円ショップと呼ばれる100円均一の店がすっかり定着して、今では「百均文化」と呼ばれるまでに成長しました。100円ショップの総売上高は5,000億円を超え、百貨店(185店舗)の総売上の1/10に迫る勢いです。近くのスーパーの２階の半分が100円ショップになっていて驚いたことがあります。日用品や文房具などの大概の商品が揃っています。エッと驚く商品やこれが100円と思う商品があって興味津々、これもお客を引きつける要因になっていると思います。時期が時期だけに、お雛様コーナーを探したらありました。可愛いグッズが所狭しと並んでいます。100円ショップの大手、ダイソーは海外にも125店舗あるそうです。

A coffee cafe that I stopped by.  The floor is decorated with Hina dolls in a marble Western-style cafe.  The menus served are all Western-style, not to mention coffee.  It will be accepted by young people without any sense of incongruity.  I think I saw the characteristics of Japanese culture here as well.  This Hinamatsuri wasn’t so popular until very recently, not to mention shortly after the war.  This may be a characteristic of the information-oriented society, but it also seems to be the result of the enrichment of society and the creation of relaxation in the mind.  There will be many events going on this year, but I’m curious about what changes will be brought into the tradition.

ふと立ち寄ったコーヒーカフェ。床は大理石の洋風カフェに雛壇が飾らせています。出されたメニューもコーヒーはもちろん全て洋風メニュー。若い方には何の違和感もなく受けいられるのでしょう。はしなくもここでも日本文化の特徴を見た思いです。この雛祭りも戦後間も無くの頃はもちろん、ごく最近までこんなに盛んではありませんでした。これも情報化社会の特徴かも知れませんが、社会が豊かになり、心にゆとりが生まれてきた結果にも思えます。この一年もこれから様々な行事が繰り広げられるでしょうが、伝統の中にどんな変化が持ち込まれるか興味が尽きません。

The daffodil flowers have almost disappeared, and the leading role has changed to plum blossoms.  The bright pink plums are further accentuated by the dark green daffodils.  There are many days when the temperature varies greatly.  There are days when the maximum temperature exceeds 20 degrees Celsius, while there are days when the minimum temperature reaches 0 degrees Celsius, and I am confused about what to wear every day.  But spring is definitely approaching.  The mountain surface looks soft with sprout sprouts, and the cherry blossom sprouts lined up along the nearby river are swelling.  The number of people walking with short sleeves is increasing.  Large carps gather while making a noise in the food that the children sprinkle.  It’s just a spring scene that I can’t think of in late February.

水仙の花はほぼ姿を消し、主役は梅に変わりました。その鮮やかなピンクの梅を緑濃い水仙がいっそう際立たせています。気温も寒暖の差が激しい日が続いています。最高気温が20度を超える日があるかと思えば、最低気温が０度になる日があったりで、着る物にも戸惑う毎日です。しかし春は確実に近づいています。山肌が新芽の芽吹きで柔らかく見え、近くの川沿いに並ぶ桜の芽が膨らみを増しています。ウォーキングする人の中には半袖の人が増えています。子供達が撒く餌に大きな鯉が水音を立てながら集まってきます。二月下旬とは思えない光景ばかりです。
