If you pass in front of the flower shop, you will find cyclamen and poinsettia lined up in a narrow space.  Among them, the bright red poinsettia stands out.  Speaking of Christmas, poinsettia.  The origin is that this red represents “the color of the blood shed by Christ”, the green of the leaves represents “eternal life and love”, and the white of the sap represents “chastity”.  The bright red part of poinsettia is not actually a flower, but a deformed leaf that wraps the bud.  The flowers are modestly blooming in the middle.  Poinsettia came from the United States in the Meiji era, but now it has been improved the breed and there are various varieties.  Some varieties are mistaken for others, such as the poinsettia winter roses in the photo.

花屋さんの前を通ったら、所狭しとシクラメンとポインセチアが並んでいます。中でも真っ赤なポインセチアが目立ちます。クリスマスと言えばポインセチア。その由来は、この赤が「キリストの流した血の色」を、葉の緑は「永遠の命や愛」を、樹液の白は「純潔」を表すからです。ポインセチアの真っ赤な部分は実は花ではなく、蕾を包む葉が変形したものです。花は真ん中にちょこんと咲いています。ポインセチアは明治時代にアメリカから入って来ましたが、今では品種改良が進み、様々な品種があります。写真のポインセチア・ウインターローズのようにバラと見間違える品種もあります。

Full-scale winter has arrived.  It is said that there is heavy snowfall in Sanin, Hokuriku, Tohoku, and Hokkaido, and there are places where the snowfall exceeds 1 m.  I put on my heavy clothes and went for a walk in the morning, but my breath was pure white.  This is my first experience this winter.  The frost columns are not standing, I don’t know for sure but my feet are fluffy.  I found a sasanqua flower in the bush along the road, and when I force my way into the bush, I found the bright red flower bordered by frost.  For a moment I was reminded of Santa Claus costume.  It even looks warm.  Half a month left this year.  It’ll be serious year-end, but the cold weather gives me momentum.

本格的な冬がやってきました。山陰、北陸から東北、北海道は大雪で、積雪が1mを超える所もあるそうです。思いっきり厚着をして朝散歩に出ましたが、吐く息は真っ白。この冬初めての体験です。霜柱こそ立っていませんが、心なしか足元がふわふわします。道沿いの藪の中に山茶花を見つけ、分け入ってみると真っ赤に膨らんだ花が霜で白く縁取られています。一瞬サンタクロースの衣装を連想しました。なんだか暖っかそうにさえ見えます。今年も残すところ月半分。大変な年末になりましたが、この寒さが逆に勢いを与えてくれます。

As I was walking along the walkway just before dawn, three Santa dolls climbing a ladder were hanging on a large camphor tree.  I unconsciously took a picture with my smartphone  as thinking that it was so cute.  What are these Santas going to do from now on?  I’m sure they will make this big camphor into a Christmas tree.  We get depressed by Corona and Corona these days, but how comfortable it is just to see such a scene.  And how much our dreams will spread.  We can imagine a nice person who hung this Santa dolls. And thank you for him or her.

まだ明けやらぬ散歩道を歩いていたら、大きな楠に梯子を登るサンタ人形が掛かっています。あまりの可愛さに思わずスマホで写真に撮りました。このサンタ達はこれからどうしようとするのか。きっとこの大きな楠をクリスマスツリーに仕立て上げるに違いありません。コロナコロナで気が滅入る昨今ですが、こんな光景を見るだけでもどれだけ心安まることか。そしてどれだけ夢が広がることか。このサンタ人形を掛けてくれた人の人柄が偲ばれますし、感謝です。

Hana Senna is blooming from the Tsuiji wall of a nearby temple.  The golden flowers bloom all over when there are few flowers, so it is amazingly beautiful.  Hana Senna is a plant of the genus Senna called Cassia, and is mainly native to South America.  It seems that it came to Japan from early on, and it is distributed as “Andean maiden” after the place of origin.  They are lined up in flower shops in small potted plants, but when planted in the ground, they grow to a few meters.  The combination of the old temple and the “Andean maiden” that is in full bloom is strange, and after being Japanese, I felt relaxed.

近くのお寺の築地塀からハナセンナが溢れる様に咲いています。花の少ない時期に黄金色の花が一面に咲くので、思わず目を見張るほどの美しさです。ハナセンナはカッシアと言ってセンナ属の植物で、主に南米が原産です。早くから日本には来たようで、原産地にちなんで「アンデスの乙女」として流通しています。小さな鉢植えで花屋さんに並んでいますが、地植えすると、2、3mに成長します。古びたお寺と元気に咲いている「アンデスの乙女」の取り合わせが何ともおかしく、日本らしいなあと、思わずほっこりしました。

The mountains spreading in front of me have completely turned reddish.  However, even though it is mid-December, it is a nice sunny day during the day.  The temperature is in the middle of November.  Large carps are swarming and swimming vigorously in the channel.  Weeds of various colors grow around there.  It is a beauty that cannot be called a weed.  This is exactly the Kusamomiji (the autumn leaves of grass).  Kusamomiji is a word that is not very familiar, but it is often sung in haiku and tanka, and recently it has been listed in travel guides as “famous spots for the Kusamomiji.”  It is said that the Kusamomiji of Ozegahara are No.1. While stroking my hair mixed with gray hair, I am looking at the Kusamomiji of grass in front of me.

眼前に広がる山々もすっかり赤茶けてしまいました。しかし、12月も半ばだと言うのに、昼間はポカポカ陽気。11月半ばの気温だそうです。近くの疏水には大きな鯉が群れをなして元気に泳いでいます。その疏水の周りには様々な色に色付いた雑草が繁っています。雑草と言うには忍びない美しさです。これぞ草紅葉です。草紅葉はあまり馴染みのないことばですが、俳句や短歌ではよく歌い込まれていて、最近では「草紅葉の名所」として、旅行案内にも載るようになりました。尾瀬ヶ原の草紅葉がNo. 1だそうです。白髪混じりの髪の毛を撫ぜながら、目の前の草紅葉に見入っています。

At the base of the trees on the tree-lined avenue for a walk in the morning, Santa with various expressions is drawn on the diagonally cut face of the log.  There are also grandfather Santa, grandmother Santa, dad Santa, mom Santa, and me Santa, who will welcome you as a whole family.  The morning dew on the dad Santa looks like sweat.  Everyone’s smiles will make you feel better.  It’s a scene that didn’t exist in the past.  There is a saying, “Well fed, well bred,” and that’s true.  It seems that the Japanese have finally regained their spiritual richness 75 years after the war.  But another battle has begun.  How do you survive this battle?  It is a battle where the true value of the Japanese is questioned.

朝散歩の並木道の木々の根元に、丸太を斜めに切った切口に、様々な表情のサンタが描かれています。お爺さんサンタ、お婆さんサンタ、お父さんサンタ、お母さんサンタ、そして私サンタ、一家勢揃いで迎えてくれるサンタもあります。お父さんサンタに掛かった朝露が汗の様に見えます。皆んなの笑顔に元気が湧きます。昔にはなかった光景です。「衣食足りて礼節を知る」と言う格言がありますが、確かにそうですね。戦後75年、日本人もやっと心の豊かさを取り戻したようです。しかしまた新たな戦いが始まりました。この戦いをどう切り抜けるのか。日本人の真価が問われる戦いです。

Kogarashi blown down from the Hira Mountains on the opposite bank crosses Lake Biwa and sprays on Chomeiji-san at an altitude of 333 m.  On the hillside, around 240m above sea level, there is Chomeiji Temple, which is the 31st temple in 33 places in Saigoku.  Climb the 808 long stairs leading from the foot of the mountain to the main hall, and you will have a panoramic view of Lake Biwa.  The color of the autumn leaves is exceptional in the cool and clear air.  Lake Biwa is one of the 20 ancient lakes in the world, second only to Lake Baikal in Russia and Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania.  Prince Shotoku is said to be the founder of Chomeiji Temple, but it seems to have been an older sacred place born from the worship of nature in Japan.

対岸の比良山系から吹き下ろした木枯らしが琵琶湖を渡り、標高333mの長命寺山に吹き付けます。その山腹、標高240m辺りに西国三十三カ所第31番札所の長命寺があります。麓から本堂に至る808段の長い階段を登りきると、琵琶湖が一望に見渡せます。ひやりと澄んだ空気の中、紅葉の色は格別です。琵琶湖は世界古代湖20のなかのひとつで、ロシアのバイカル湖、タンザニアのタンガニーカ湖に次ぐ湖です。長命寺も聖徳太子が開祖と言うことですが、もっと古く、日本の自然崇拝の中から生まれた聖地だと思われます。

Winter cherry blossoms are in bloom while the other trees around are turning red.  The number of flowers is larger than usual, but not gorgeous as spring.  Of course.  Cherry blossoms are valuable only because they bloom in spring, and the cherry blossoms that bloom among the falling leaves are just only a sideshow.  However, it is winter cherry blossoms that also make you feel somehow charms.  Uba-Zakura is a common name for cherry blossoms that bloom before the leaves come out. And because it means that there are no leaves, which means “no teeth”, it means a woman who still retains her beauty and sensuality even after she is in old.  I think it was Yakumo Koizumi, but he said that the cherry blossoms are called “nanny cherry blossoms” because they bloom wonderful flowers with a color like breast milk before the leaves come out. Aha!

辺りの木々が紅葉する中、冬桜が花を咲かせています。例年になく花数も多いのですが、やはり春の華やかさはありません。当たり前です。桜は春に咲いてこその桜で、散り行く落ち葉の中で咲く桜は余興にしか過ぎません。しかし、どことなく色香を感じさせるのも冬桜です。まさに姥桜です。姥桜とは葉が出るより先に花が開く桜の通称で、葉がないことを「歯無し」に掛けた語ということで、女盛りを過ぎても、なお美しさや色気が残っている女性の意味に使われます。確か小泉八雲だったと思いますが、桜は葉が出る前に、母乳のような色の見事な花を咲かせるから、これを「乳母桜」と呼ぶんだと言っています。合点です。

Kinmedai (Splendid alfonsino) is in season now.  This is because it is the most greasy from December to February.  Kinmedai has a beautiful crimson color, but when swimming in the sea, it is a pale crimson color and becomes darker after death.  It is mainly caught off the Pacific coast of Izu, Choshi, and Shikoku, but Shizuoka Prefecture is the largest producer of Kinmedai in Japan.  Fishing is especially popular in the Izu region, and the three major brands of “Susaki’s day-turning Kinme,” “Inatori Kinme,” and “Ito’s local Kinme” are famous.  Kinmedai is a white body  fish that is high in protein relative to the amount of fat and cholesterol and is easy to digest, so it is an important source of protein that is also gentle on the gastrointestinal tract.  However, Kinmedai has become a high-class fish in recent years, and it is not until January that it is available in general stores.

今、金目鯛が旬です。12月から2月にかけて最も脂がのっているからです。金目鯛は美しい紅色をしていますが、海の中で泳いでいる時は淡い紅色で、死後色が濃くなります。伊豆沖や銚子沖、四国など主に太平洋側の各地で漁獲されますが、静岡県が金目鯛の水揚げ量日本一の産地です。特に伊豆地方で漁が盛んで、「須崎の日戻り地金目」「稲取キンメ」「伊東の地キンメ」の3大ブランドが有名です。金目鯛は白身の魚で、脂肪分やコレステロールの量に対してタンパク質が多く、消化もしやすいので、胃腸にも優しい重要なタンパク源です。ただ金目鯛は近年すっかり高級魚になってしまって、一般の店頭に並ぶのは1月を過ぎてからです。

At the foot of Mt. Kongo, which is the only one in Osaka that exceeds 1,000 meters, there is also the only village in Osaka, Chihayaakasaka Village.  Chihayaakasaka Village has the smallest population, less than 5,000.  Located on the prefectural border with Nara, it is known as the birthplace of Masashige Kusunoki, who supported Emperor Go-Daigo during the Northern and Southern Dynasties.  It is a historical and tourist village surrounded by nature such as Mt. Kongo where it is said that En-no-gyoja trained and the rice terraces of Shimoakasaka, and the catchphrase is “Japan’s No. 1 Marginal Village”.  There are plenty of vegetables and fruits in each season, and many shoppers come from the surrounding towns in search of them.  It is also the production center of persimmons, and now you can see weeping persimmons here and there as shown in the photo.

大阪で唯一1,000メートルを超える金剛山の麓に、これまた大阪で唯一の村、千早赤坂村があります。千早赤阪村は、人口が最も少なく、5,000人足らず。奈良との県境にあり、南北朝時代に後醍醐天皇を支えた楠木正成の出身地として知られています。役行者が修行したと言われる金剛山や下赤坂の棚田などの自然に囲まれた歴史と観光の村で、キャッチフレーズは「日本一の限界集落」。四季折々の野菜や果物が豊富で、それを求めて周りの街々から沢山の買い物客がやってきます。柿の産地でもあり、今は写真のように、枝垂柿があちらこちらでみられます。
