At Narcissus area in Tonboike Park in Kishiwada City, Osaka, I am sitting on a chaise lounge with red carpet, drinking amazake and listening to the songs of Brothers Four flowing from my smartphone. By the way, the songs I listen to are “Seven Daffodils”.

『セブン ダフォディルズ』は、リー・ヘイズが作詞作曲し、カレッジ　フォークソングの旗手として頭角を現していたフォークグループ　ザ・ブラザース・フォア (The Brothers Four) が、この曲を1964年にカバーし、大ヒットした名曲です。歌詞の内容は、家も土地もお金もない貧しい大学生が恋人に七つの水仙を捧げようと いうないようの恋歌です。

Three days from January 25 are Lunar New Year.  In Japan, the event is almost forgotten except in some regions.  But it is the most important holiday in Southeast Asia including China.

1月25日から３日間は旧正月です。日本では一部の地方を除いてはすでに忘れ去られようとしています。しかし、中国では春節としてもっとも重要な祝祭日になっていて、日本にもこの休みを利用して多くの人々が押し寄せています。

In normal years, Fuki-no-tou, which sprout with frost pillars and open leaves with thaw, are about to bloom this year without such ordeals. Fuki-no-tou is an indispensable foodstuffs in early spring wild vegetable dishes, but what about the taste this year?

蕗の薹は、例年なら、霜柱を掻い潜って芽を出し、雪解けと共に葉を広げますが、今年は、霜柱が立つこともないし、雪も降らず、もう花さえ開こうとしています。春先の山菜料理として欠かせない蕗の薹は、今年はどんな味がするのでしょう。

While walking around Kodaiji Temple in Kyoto Gion, camellia flowers were arranged in a circle on white pebbles laid out by the roadside. I am deeply impressed by the kindness and aesthetic sense of the person who made this.

Setsubunso begins to bloom after the Setsubun, but it has already bloomed this year. I think everyone will want to gently snuggle up to the secretly blooming dainty little flower in this cold day.

節分草は節分を過ぎた頃から咲き始めます。最近の他の例にもれず今年はもう花を開いています。西日本の石灰質を多く含んだ地層に、時には群れをなして咲きますが、乱獲で見かけることも少なくなりました。

“Toi Sakura” which is said to be the earliest bloom in Japan, is a cherry blossom that blooms only in the Toi Onsen area of Nishiizu. The blossoms bloom earlier than Kawazu Sakura, buds begin to sprout from mid-December, bloom from mid-January and continue to bloom for about two months until mid-February.

土肥桜は西伊豆の土肥温泉周辺にだけ咲く桜で、早咲きで有名な河津桜より1週間早く咲き始めると言われています。沖縄の開花期とほぼ同じ時期です。北海道大学の故小川義雄氏が西伊豆に医院で見付け品種改良されて生まれました。

Yukiwariso, snow-breaking grass, that always sprout from the snow is blooming this winter without waiting for the snow. It’s a flower that tells coming spring, but every time I see this flower, I feel lonely and recall the past and get likely to spill tears.

いつもなら薄く積もった雪を割って芽を出し始める雪割草ですが、今年は雪も降らず、芽どころか花まで咲かせています。春を告げる花ですが、いつ見ても寂し気で、この花を見るたびに昔のことが思い出され、涙がこぼれそうになります。

Christmas-rose blooms during this time when there are few flowers, so they are very popular with some lovers. This flower has long been compared to a noble lady as a noble flower, and was also adorned before God.  Even in Japan, they are sometimes displayed in tea rooms.

クリスマスローズは多種多様で、その中の一種がクリスマスに開花することから付いた名前です。多くは１月中旬から春先にかけて咲き続けます。BC５５０年の第一次神聖戦争で今でいう化学兵器の原料にもなったということでも知られている毒性の強い花です。種でしか増やしにくく、同じ種の花でも姿、形が様々なオンリーワンの花で、それに魅せられた愛好家も沢山います。冬の茶室によく見かける花もクリスマスローズですから茶室も和洋折衷です。

Red and white turnips dug out of frozen soil are very juicy and delicious.  I love turnips sliced thinly and pickled in sweet vinegar.  When simmered, it softens to melt and is also delicious. Turnip is also an indispensable a la carte for winter cooking.

冬の大根も美味しいですが、蕪もまた格別です。柔らくてとてもジューシー。特に薄くスライスして甘酢に漬けた酢の物はご飯にも合いますし、茶菓子（？）としても一品です。ちなみに、蕪を「かぶら」というのは関西で、これが元々の呼び名だったようですが、関東方言で「かぶ」と言っていたのが、今はこれが標準語。「かぶら」は関西方言ということになっています。

“Mogari” is a fence made of a combination of bamboo. When a strong winter wind blows onto such fences, bamboo fences, electric wires, etc., it makes a whistle-like sound. “Mogaribue” is a word that describes that sound.

冬の冷たくて強い風を表わす言葉は沢山あります。その中でも最も厳しくて最も美しい言葉が「虎落笛」です。「虎落」とは竹で編んだフェンスのことで、強い風が吹くとヒューヒューとまるで笛を吹くように聞こえます。虎落だけでなく、街中でも電線に強い風が吹いても聞こえます。このような音を形容したのが「虎落笛」です。満開の山茶花がこの虎落笛に舞い落ちた朝です。
