Wearing a jet-black dress with red rubies and black pearls, Black Pepper looks like a lady.  The English name is Black Pearl.  It is an ornamental red pepper and cannot be eaten.  The leaves are green when young (sprouts), but gradually turn into beautiful black leaves.  It branches well without trimming and forms itself naturally.  The fruits are produced from the end of summer to the beginning of autumn, and come in various colors such as red, yellow, orange, black, and purple.  It is native to the tropical regions of South America and North America, and is an annual plant from early summer to autumn because it is good at hot weather but not cold.  The ornamental period is long from June to December, and it is a plant that can be used for various purposes such as flower beds and group planting.

赤いルビーと黒真珠をあしらった漆黒のドレスを身に纏った黒唐辛子はまるで貴婦人の様な佇まいです。英名はブラックパール。あくまでも観賞用唐辛子で食用にはできません。葉は、若葉（新芽）のときは緑色ですが徐々に美しい黒葉になります。整枝をしなくてもよく分枝して自然に形が整います。 実は夏の終わりから秋口にかけてでき、色は、赤、黄色、オレンジ、黒、紫などカラフルな色合いで、別名五色トウガラシとも呼ばれます。原産は南アメリカ～北アメリカの熱帯地域で、暑いのは得意ですが寒さは苦手なため、初夏から秋までの一年草です。観賞期間は6月～12月と長く、花壇や寄せ植えなど、様々な用途で利用できる植物です。

I haven’t seen my grandchildren living in Shanghai, China for two and a half years because of their father’s work.  In Shanghai, the lockdown that had lasted for more than two months was lifted on June 1st.  As a result, with the exception of some areas, about 22.5 million people, or about 90% of the population of Shanghai, have been able to move freely, and basic public transportation services and store operations have resumed.  I thought it would be able to see my grandchildren in the very summer vacation this year, but shortly after the lockdown was lifted, community-acquired infections spread in the city center, and a partial lockdown was implemented.  In line with this, infected people were found one after another in Beijing and other areas, and vigilance is spreading not only in Shanghai but throughout China.  Even in Japan, the “seventh wave” of the new coronavirus has spread rapidly around the time summer vacation begins, and the situation is still unpredictable.  At this rate, I won’t be able to see my grandchildren for a while yet.

父親の仕事の関係で中国上海市に住んでいる孫たちとはもう２年半会っていません。上海市では6月1日、2カ月以上続いていたロックダウンが解除されました。これにより、一部地域を除き、上海市の人口の約9割に当たる約2250万人が自由に移動できるようになり、公共交通機関の基本サービスや、店舗の営業も再開されました。今年の夏休みこそと思っていましたが、ロックダウンが解除されて間もなく、市内中心部で市中感染が広がり、また部分的なロックダウンが実施されました。これに合わせるかの様に北京市やその他地域でも感染者が次々に見つかり、上海市はもちろん、中国全土に警戒が広がっています。日本でも夏休みが始まる頃に新型コロナウイルスの「代７波」が急拡大、まだ予断を許さない状況が続いています。この分ではまだ暫く孫たちと会えそうにありません。

今日は処暑、二十四節気の14番目の節気です。二十四節気とは、1年を春夏秋冬の4つの季節に分け、さらにそれぞれを6つに分けた季節用語です。立秋と白露に挟まれた期間で、夏の暑さが止むという意味から「処暑」といわれ、厳しい暑さが峠を越して、落ち着く頃と言われています。同時に今日は「打ち水の日」の最終日でもあります。国土交通省のNPO法人・日本水フォーラム（東京）などの民間団体が2003年（平成15年）から「打ち水大作戦」と呼びかけて実施している行事で、「ヒートアイランド現象は百万人が一斉に打ち水をすれば気温を2℃下げられる」と訴えています。夏の甲子園も仙台育英が東北地方に初めての優勝旗をもたらしました。秋はすぐ近くです。

There is no forecast for an extremely hot day today, but the heat is almost that.  It looks like we won’t be able to escape the heat this week.  Autumn is slowly approaching.  The persimmon tree that stands on the side of the promenade is firmly bearing fruit.  A short distance away stands a chestnut tree with many chestnut balls.  Going summer, coming autumn, my thoughts are complicated.  High school baseball finals today.  Whether Sendai Ikuei wins or Shimonoseki Kokusai wins, whichever wins, it will be the first victory, and if Sendai Ikuei wins, it will be the first school in the Tohoku region to win.  The game will start at 2:00 pm in this intense heat.  Don’t lose either!

今日も猛暑日の予報は立っていませんが、ほとんどそれに近い暑さです。今週いっぱいはこの暑さから逃れないようです。それでもじわじわと秋は近づいてきています。散歩道の脇に立つ柿の木に青柿がしっかり実を付けています。少し離れた所には沢山の毬栗を付けた栗の木が立っています。行く夏、来る秋、思いは複雑です。今日は高校野球の決勝戦。仙台育英が勝つか、下関国際が勝つか、いずれが勝っても初優勝で、仙台育英が勝てば、東北地方で初めての優勝校になるそうです。この猛暑の中での戦いは午後２時試合開始です。どちらも負けるな！

The first time I climbed Mt. Shirouma was from Sarukura.  Sarukura Cottage is 1250m and Mt. Shirouma is 2932m, so the altitude difference is about 1680m.  The difference in elevation between Mt. Eboshi and Bunatate Ridge, which I had climbed the year before, was 1,220m, so Mt.Shirouma is higher in terms of elevation difference, but this was much easier. Of course, the trail to Mt. Eboshi-dake is counted as one of Japan’s three most steep climbs, so it’s natural. And, when I arrived at Hakuba Cottage, I was surprised to find that the stove was burning hot even though it was midsummer.  The temperature was 2°C, so it’s natural.  Hakuba Cottage is now on par with a luxury hotel, but at that time it was a normal mountain lodge, albeit large in scale.  On the way down from Mt. Shirouma, I stopped by Renge Onsen.  It was a really simple hot spring along the mountain trail.  Of course naked in mixed bathing.  It looks like it’s changed completely now.

一番最初に白馬岳に登ったのは猿倉からでした。宿泊した猿倉山荘が1250mで白馬岳が2932mですから、標高差はおよそ1680m。その前の年に登ったブナ立尾根から烏帽子岳への標高差が1220mでしたから、標高差としては白馬岳のほうが上なのですが、こちらのほうがうんと楽でした。もっとも、烏帽子岳への登攀路は日本三大急登に数えられているわけですから、当たり前なのですが。そして、白馬山荘に着いてビックリしたのは、真夏だというのに、ストーブががんがん焚かれていたことです。気温2℃でしたから当たり前ですわね。白馬山荘も今では高級ホテルなみになっていますが、その当時は、規模は大きかったですが、普通の山小屋でした。そして白馬岳からの下山途中に寄ったのが蓮華温泉。登山道に沿った実に素朴な温泉でした。混浴でもちろん素っ裸。今はすっかり様変わりしてしまった様です。

The hot days have passed, and it’s time to feel the signs of autumn.  When you enter the mountains, the tsukutsuku-boshi cicadas will start singing, and when you go to the sea, you will only hear the voices of seabirds.  It is said that it is a rule of the world that what gets up must come down, but when it comes to nature, too, we feel a little lonely after the peak. The word late summer is perfect. High school baseball is the semi-finals today. The day after tomorrow is the final.  It’s still the height of summer here.  High school baseball players, do your best!

暑い暑い日々も過ぎ、秋の気配を感じる頃になりました。山に入るとツクツクボウシが鳴き始め、海に行くと海鳥の声が聞こえるだけです。盛者必衰は世の習いとは言いますが、自然にも盛りを過ぎれば一抹の寂しさを感じます。晩夏という言葉がピッタリです。高校野球は今日が準決勝。明後日は決勝。ここだけはまだ夏の真っ盛りです。皆んながんばれ！

Yesterday, for the first time this summer, I spent all day without the air conditioner on.  High school baseball was also in the quarterfinals, and every match was a white-knuckle match, and it was a day where I could feel the midsummer for the first time in a while.  When you turn on the air conditioner, you only can know “the extremely hot day” every day, but you can’t really feel it.  However, even if it is “a hot summer day” like yesterday, you can really feel the heat of summer when you turn off the air conditioner.  What an ironic result.  The favored Omi High School barely beat the prestigious Takamatsu Commercial High School. After the game, Omi High School pitcher Yamada said to Takamatsu Commercial High School slugger Asano, “Nice batting. Complete defeat.”  My chest felt hot.  The highlight of the day was, of course, Shimonoseki Kokusai’s victory over Toin High School, the number one contender for the spring and summer title.  After the match, the tears of the defeated Osaka Toin Nine brought tears to my eyes.  It was a nice day.

昨日は、この夏初めて一日中エアコンを入れずに過ごしました。高校野球も準々決勝、どの対戦も手に汗握る熱戦で、久々に真夏を実感できる一日になりました。エアコンを入れていると、猛暑日の毎日も聞き伝わるだけで実感はありません。しかし、昨日の様に真夏日であっても、エアコンを切っていると、さすがに夏の暑さを実感できます。何とも皮肉な結果です。贔屓の近江高校はかろうじて名門、高松商業に競り勝ちました。試合後、近江高校の山田投手が、高松商業のスラッガー、浅野選手に「ナイスバッティング。完敗や」と声をかけたそうです。胸が熱くなりました。そしてこの日の圧巻は何と言っても、春夏の連覇を狙う優勝候補ナンバーワンの桐蔭高校を下関国際が下したことです。試合後、敗れた大阪桐蔭ナインの号泣する姿に、こちらまで涙がこぼれました。いい一日でした。

Recently, I often see advertisements about a park planted with thousands of sunflowers.  Sunflowers are certainly the flower that represents summer, and the sight of sunflowers blooming as far as the eye can see is a peaceful sight.  But this year is different.  Sunflowers remind us of wartime Ukraine and remind us of the old masterpiece “Sunflowers”.  The sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine and is now a symbol of resistance to Russian aggression.  The movie “Sunflowers” is being revived in Japan and around the world, and part of the sales will be donated to humanitarian aid in Ukraine.  In the old days, the movie “Sunflowers” was widely advertised as being set in Russia, but it seems that this movie cannot be seen at all in Russia.  This is because the real setting of “Sunflower” is a village called Chernichiyar near Poltava, a city in central Ukraine.  President Putin went on a military march with a self-righteous idea that “the nation of Ukraine does not exist”, but the people of Ukraine have been forming their own language since the country was formed around the capital Kyiv in the 9th century. It is a truly independent nation that has protected its culture and traditions.

最近は、ヒマワリを何千本植えた公園だとかいう宣伝がよく目に付きます。確かにヒマワリは夏を代表する花で、見渡す限りヒマワリの花が咲いている光景は平和そのものです。しかし、今年は違います。ヒマワリを見れば戦時下にあるウクライナのことを連想し、昔の名画『ひまわり』をおもいだします。ヒマワリの花はウクライナの国花でもあり、いまロシアの軍事侵攻に対する抵抗の象徴にもなっています。映画『ひまわり』は、日本はもちろん世界各地でリバイバル上映されていて、売り上げの一部はウクライナの人道支援のために寄付されるということです。昔は、映画『ひまわり』の舞台はロシアということで大いに宣伝していたロシアでは、この映画はいっさい観ることができないそうです。『ひまわり』の本当の舞台は、ウクライナの中部の都市ポルタワ近くにあるチェルニチー・ヤールという村だからです。プーチン大統領は「ウクライナという国民国家は存在しない」という独善的な考えで軍事進行の暴挙に出たわけですが、ウクライナの人々は9世紀に首都キーウを中心に国が形作られて以来、独自の言語や文化などを守ってきたれっきとした独立国家です。

August 16th is the last day of Obon.  It’s still a hot and humid season, but the Gozan no Okuribi floated in the night sky of Kyoto as if to miss the leaving summer.  Due to the corona crisis, the scale of the event was reduced from the year before last and last year, but this year, for the first time in three years, all fire beds were ignited.  This bonfire has the meaning of sending the spirits of ancestors who have returned to our homes in the underworld.  It is said that if you write your name and other information on the goma tree that is lit by the bonfire, it will ward off evil, and if you drink it with the bonfire reflected in the cup, you will not get paralyzed.  In the evening, thunder roared and it rained heavily, so the daimonji was delayed, but by 8:30, all of the daimonji, myo-ho, funagata, hidari daimonji, and torii-gata were lit. emerged in the summer night sky.  By the time the fire was extinguished, it was a night where I could feel the signs of autumn creeping in.

8月16日はお盆の最後。まだまだ蒸し暑い季節ですが、ゆく夏を惜しむように、五山の送り火が京の夜空に浮かびあがりました。コロナ禍の影響で、一昨年、去年と規模を縮小して実施されましたが、今年は3年ぶりにすべての火床で点火が行われました。この送り火には盆に我が家に戻ってきた先祖の精霊が、再び冥府に帰るのを送るという意味があります。送り火で点火する護摩木に、名前などを書いて納めると厄除けに、また盃に送り火を映して飲むと中風にならないとも言われています。夕方には雷鳴が轟き、強い雨が降った為、「大文字」が遅れましたが、８時半には「大文字」「妙・法」「船形」「左大文字」「鳥居形」の全てが夏の夜空に浮かび上がりました。火が消える頃には、忍び寄る秋の気配をわずかに感じられる一夜になりました。

Obon in 2022 is over today.  Each household also folds the offerings in front of the Buddhist altar, lights the bonfire with a flint, and sends the Buddha off.  In the old days, people used to go to a nearby river, perform these kinds of Buddhist rituals, and run offerings into the river.  In recent years, it is prohibited in many rivers because it is treated as garbage waste.  And most of all, in Kansai, today is the “Kyoto Gozan no Okuribi”.  It’s the first time in three years that the event has been held, and many people are already flocking to Kyoto in the daytime. At night, the mountains surrounding Kyoto city are lit up with flames of “Large,” “Myoho,” “Funagata,” “Left Daimonji,” and “Torii”. The flames are said to send the spirits of the dead, called shorai-san, to the afterlife.  It is said that more than 100,000 people come to watch the Gozan no Okuribi even on weekdays, but this year, even more people are expected.

2022年のお盆も今日でお終い。各家庭でも仏壇の前のお供物をたたみ、火打ち石で送り火を灯し、仏様をお送りします。昔は近くの川に行って、こうした仏事を行い、お供物などを川に流したものです。近年はゴミ廃棄物として処理される為、多くの河川では禁止されています。そして何と言っても、関西では、今日行われる『京都五山の送り火』です。３年ぶりの開催ということで、もう多くの人達が昼間から京都に押し寄せているそうです。夜ともなれば、京都市を囲む山々に炎の「大」「妙法」「船形」「左大文字」「鳥居形」が次々に浮かび上がります。その炎で、お精霊（しょらい）さんと呼ばれる死者の霊をあの世へ送り届けるとされています。 五山の送り火の見物客は平日でも10万人を超えるといわれますが、今年はより一層の人出が予想すれます。
