Mt. Fuji is always beautiful in spring, summer, autumn and winter.  Mt. Fuji is dignified no matter when you look at it in the morning, day or night.  From Hokkaido to Okinawa, the whole of Japan is at the foot of Mt. Fuji.  Mt. Fuji is the most symbolic representation of Japan and the Japanese people.  In the 21st century, the quarter century is very similar to the quarter century in the 20th century.  A pandemic caused by the coronavirus, the international situation becoming grave, a global crisis caused by climate change, and the very beginning of the century of chaos.  Only Japan can put together such a world.  Japanese culture, which has been nurtured by the oldest tradition in the world, has the power to unite the world.

春夏秋冬いつ見ても美しい富士山です。朝昼晩いつ見ても凛々しい富士山です。北海道から沖縄まで日本全体が富士山の裾野にあります。日本をそして日本人を最も象徴的に具現しているのが富士山です。21世紀も四分の一半世紀は20世紀の四分の一半世紀に実によく似ています。コロナウイルスによるパンデミック、キナ臭い世界情勢、気候変動による地球規模の危機、まさにカオスの世紀初めです。そんな世界を纏められるのは日本しかありません。世界一古い伝統に支えられ育んできた日本文化こそ世界を纏め上げる力を持っています。

The fruit of Karasuuri is an egg shape with a length of about 5 to 7 cm, and before it is colored, it has a thin vertical stripe pattern on the green and looks just like a melon.  As it ripens, the striped pattern disappears, gradually turning orange, and finally turning red like a mixture of vermilion.  Although it is named crow, it has nothing to do with crows’ favorite food.  The fruit is so big that if it could be eaten,  it would be a crow.

毎年この頃になると気になるのはカラスウリ。今年の夏もあの妖しげな花が咲いていたので、きっと実ができているに違いないと薮を分け入ってみると、期待に違わず立派な実が成っていました。折りからの夕陽を受けてくれない色がいっそう鮮やかです。カラスウリの実は長さ5~7㎝程度のたまご型で、色付く前はグリーンに薄っすらと縦に縞模様が入ってウリにそっくりです。熟すに従い縞模様は消え、段々とオレンジ色に色付いていき、最終的には朱を混ぜたような赤へと変わっていきます。カラスと名に冠しますが、カラスが好んで食べるとかと言ったような関係はありません。実が大きいので、食べるならカラスくらいだろうと想像して付けられた名でしょう。

突然の寒気到来で仏桑華(ぶっそうげ)もびっくりした様な表情です。元々南国生まれの仏桑華ですから、亜熱帯化しつつある日本は住みやすい所です。花期は長く、6月から10月にかけて咲き続けます。しかし今年の季節の急変には驚いていることでしょう。仏桑華はアオイ科フヨウ属に含まれる常緑の低木樹で、世界的にも栽培が盛んなハイビスカスの原種となった植物です。ハイビスカスはいかにも現代風な名前ですが、仏桑華は線香臭い感じがして余り人には知られていません。しかし、仏桑華は古代から世界中の人々を虜にしてきた記録も残されています。

和歌山県有田市に関西きってのコスモスの大パノラマ公園があります。標高586mの鷲ヶ峰山頂には100万本のコスモスの花が咲き乱れ、眼下には曲がりくねった有田川とその先の紀伊水道の海面が夕日を跳ね返しています。気温はかなり低く、長袖のシャツを着ていても寒いくらいです。昼間は沢山の人がいましたが、今はだいぶ人影も少なくなって、夕照迫る大パノラマも幕を下ろそうとしています。下界も今日からはかなり涼しいそうです。帰りを急がねばなりません。

大阪の16日の気温は28度、夏日です。翌27日の予想最高気温は19度ですから、昨日は夏、今日は秋、それも晩秋です。北海道からは初雪の便り。ラジオを聞いていると、全国各地のリスナーから炬燵の準備をしているとの便りが届いています。ここ数年は気象の変動の激しさに皆が引っ掻き回されている感じがします。今年の11月1〜12日、英国グラスゴー「国連気候変動枠組条約第26回締約国会議」(COP26)が開催されます。COP26では、2015年に締結された「パリ協定」と「気候変動に関する国際連合枠組条約」の目標達成に向けた行動を加速させるため、締約国が一堂に会して議論します。遅きに失した感は拭えませんが、我々も積極的に関与して行きたいものです。

金目鯛はこれから12月に掛けてが旬です。金目鯛は鯛と名前が付きますが、鯛ではありません。北海道と沖縄をのぞく日本全域、日本海、東シナ海などの水深200mよりも浅い岩礁の底付近に生息している深海魚です。大きいものだと50cmを超えます。伊豆半島・伊豆諸島周辺でとれたものが水揚げされる静岡県下田港が水揚げ日本一で、「稲取金目鯛」とか「須崎の日戻り金目鯛」、「トロ金目」とか言って高値で取り引きされます。そのほか、千葉の「銚子つりきんめ」、高知の「室戸沖取れ金目鯛」、「松輪の地金目鯛」などどれもブランド化される高級魚です。金目鯛の眼は大きく、眼球全体が澄んでいて中の水晶体がきれいなものが新鮮です。また、体表全体に艶があり色は鮮やかな赤色をしているもの、触って固いものが新鮮な金目鯛です。

せつないですね。秋の景色を眺めているとつい口ずさみたくなるのが「赤とんぼ」。歳を取れば取るほど心に滲みてきます。そっとひとりで口ずさみます。みるみるうちに辺りの景色がぼやけてきます。歌い終わる頃には涙が止まりません。幼い頃に両親が離婚。実家に帰った母親が差し向けた15歳の「姐や」に負んぶされて聞いていた母の便りも、姐やがお嫁入りしたので聞けなくなりました。そんな寂しい思い出を、母の実家のある北海道でセラピストとして働いていた三木露風が作詞したのが「赤とんぼ」です。過去の思い出は皆んな違います。しかし皆んなが口ずさみたくなるのが「赤とんぼ」です。

東京都内では13日、新たに72人が新型コロナウイルスに感染していることが確認され、5日連続で100人を下回ったそうです。ピーク時には一日の感染者数が6,000人近くになったことを思えば、信じられない様な数字です。このまま収まってくれるよう祈るばかりですが、ワクチン摂取も３回目が準備されている様ですから、まだまだ油断できません。気温は相変わらず夏日が続いていますが、来週は一気に5、6度下がるそうですから、いよいよ晩秋に突入です。まさに物思わせる秋ですね。

On the way back from visiting the historic old temple, Taima-dera Temple,  in Katsuragi City, Nara Prefecture, walking along the winding old road, flowers like cluster amaryllis are shining and blooming in front of the gate of the old house.  If I look it up on Google Lens immediately, it says Nerine Bowdeny.  After all it is a flower of the cluster amaryllis.  It blooms from mid-October to mid-November, one month later than Higanbana(cluster amaryllis), and is characterized by a long flowering period.  The flower name “Nerine” comes from the sea goddess “Nereids”, which is famous for the beauty of Greek mythology.  Also, it shines beautifully when exposed to the sun, so it is called “diamond lily” in English. Nerine was introduced to England in 1904 and was raised to an unexpected beauty from its original species by the hands of Lionel Rothschild, the owner of the Rothschild Bank.  That is Nerine Guernsey.  It came to Japan in 1912.

奈良県葛城市にある古刹當麻寺を訪ねての帰り、曲がりくねった古道を歩いていると、旧家の門前に彼岸花の様な花がラメを施した様にキラキラ光って咲いています。早速Google Lensで調べると、ネリネ・ボウデニーとあります。やはりヒガンバナ族の花です。彼岸花より1か月遅れの10月中旬～11月中旬に開花し花期が長いのが特徴です。「ネリネ」という花名はギリシャ神話の美しさで有名な海の女神「ネレイデス」からきています。また、太陽の光が当たると綺麗に光るので英名では「diamond lily」と呼ばれます。ネリネは1904年にイギリスに紹介され、ロスチャイルド銀行のオーナーであったライオネル・ロスチャイルドらの手によって､原種からは予想もしなかった美しさにまで引き上げられました。それがネリネ・ボウデニーです。日本には１９１２年に渡来しました。

若い仏御前にその座を奪われ、清盛の邸を追われた祇王（21歳）が、妹の祇女（19歳）、母の刀自（45歳）と共に尼となって庵を結んだのが往生院。晩秋のある夜、その板戸を叩く音に恐る恐る戸を開けると、”いつか我が身も同じ運命”と悟って清盛の元から逃げ出た仏御前（17歳）がではないか。旧怨を捨てた祇王母子と仏御前の四人は、狭い方丈足らずの往生院で念仏三昧の余生を送ったという。山上山下にわたって広い寺域を占めていた往生院も後年は荒廃し、ささやかな尼寺として残り、後に祇王寺と呼ばれるようになったそうです。
