Fuji floating in the morning mist that flutters at the foot of the mountain, the surface of the lake, and the sky are all dyed in pale orange.  In the foreground, a lovely caruna colored in bright red is in full bloom so as to overlook this scene.  This is what it means to be breathtaking.  Mt. Fuji weaves beautiful scenery in every season, but I never expected to see such a beautiful Mt. Fuji in this rainy season.  By the way, Karuna is a closely related species of Erica and both are also called heath.  Heath is a desolate land around Yorkshire in northern England, and the Karuna and Erica that bloom there have come to be called heath.  The 19th-century English writer Emily Fronte’s novel “Wuthering Heights” sadly depicts the desolate landscape and the people living there.  I can’t imagine it from the Karuna blooming at the foot of Mt. Fuji.

山裾にたなびく朝霧も湖面も空も一面に淡い橙色に染まった中に浮かぶ富士。手前にはこの光景を見渡す様に、真っ赤に色付いた可憐なカルーナが咲き乱れています。息を呑むとはこのことです。春夏秋冬どの季節にも美しい風景を織りなす富士山ですが、まさかこの梅雨の季節にこんなに美しい富士山が見られるとは期待もしませんでした。ちなみに、カルーナはエリカの近縁種でどちらもヒースとも呼ばれます。ヒースとはイングランド北部のヨークシャ辺りの荒涼とした土地のことで、そこに咲くカルーナやエリカをヒースとも呼ぶようになりました。19世紀のイギリスの作家、エミリー・フロンテの小説『嵐が丘』には、その荒涼とした風景とそこに生活する人達の様子が悲しくも描かれています。今見る富士山の裾野に咲くカルーナからは想像もできません。
