古民家が並ぶ街角に、いかにも古めかしい赤い郵便ポストが立ったいます。小雪がちらつく中、その赤さが目立ちます。今までに見たことのないポストなので余計に気になります。スマホで写真に撮って家に帰って調べてみました。日本で郵便事業が創業されたのは、明治4(1871)年で、この時、日本で最初の郵便ポストも誕生しました。創業時の郵便ポストは、脚付の台に四角い箱をのせた木製のものでしたが、明治34(1901)年に火事に強い鉄製の赤い円柱形のポストが試験的に設置されました。これが赤い丸形ポストの始まりです。現在では角形ポストが主流になっていますが、一部の観光名所などでは今でも赤い丸形ポストが設置されています。いろんなポストが紹介されていますが、写真の様なポストは見つかりません。今やSNSの時代。郵便ポストを利用することは滅多にありません。小雪がちらつく中、レトロな赤い郵便ポストにノスタルジックな思いが頭の中を駆け巡りました。
