Valentine’s Day in Japan is different from the West. In Japan, only women give gifts on Valentine’s Day, rather than couples exchanging cards and gifts. Usually, the gift is chocolate, and when it is given to a loved one by a woman, it is called “Honmei-choco”. This unique Valentine’s Day in Japan began in the 1960s with a confectionery company implementing a promotion that encouraged women to send chocolate to their favorite men.

2月14日のバレンタインデイもすっかり日本に定着したようです。この日に女性がお目当ての男性にチョコレートを贈れば恋が成就するという信仰が生まれ、チョコレートの売り上げが倍増しました。1960年代に製菓会社が仕掛けたそうです。今では、「本命チョコ」だけでなく、「義理チョコ」、「友チョコ」、「逆チョコ」、「自己チョコ」、「強敵（とも）チョコ」と様々なバレンタインチョコがあるそうです。
