Today is Risshun(the first day of spring). It’s the first of the twenty-four solar terms, which divides the year into 24 equal parts according to the lunar calendar.  In other words, the first day of the year is Risshun.  Therefore, Setsubun, the day before that, has the same meaning as New Year’s Eve. In that case, Risshun can be considered New Year’s Day of the Lunar New Year. So it is said that people began throwing beans on Setsubun, hoping to ward off bad luck before the new year comes. However, the Chinese New Year is a word that refers to the beginning of the new year in the Chinese lunar calendar (lunar solar calendar), and the Chinese New Year in the Chinese lunar calendar is the day(around January 22nd) when the second new moon rises in the sky after Touji(the winter solstice).  The Japanese New Year was also corresponded with the New Year, so Risshun did not become the Lunar New Year.

今日は立春です。太陰暦で１年を24等分した二十四節気の１番目の節気です。つまり1年の始まりにあたる日が立春です。したがって、その前日である節分は大晦日と同じような意味合いを持っていて、「新しい年が来る前に、厄を払っておこう」という想いを込めて、節分に豆まきをするようになったといわれています。そうすると、立春の日が旧正月の元旦と考えてもいいわけです。しかし、旧正月は中国の旧暦(太陰太陽暦)における新年の始まりを指す言葉で、中国の旧暦における正月は冬至から２回目の新月が空に上がる日とされています。日本の旧正月も中国の旧正月に合わせた為、立春が旧正月にはなりませんでした。
