Whether you go to a convenience store or a supermarket, there are lots of osechi(special dishes for the New Year’s Day) advertisements.  Every ad looks really tasty.  Suddenly I remember the old days.  After the 25th of the year, you can hear the sound of making mochi(rice cakes) from all over the neighborhood.  When the mochi-tsuki is finished, it’s time to prepare osechi dishes.  Go to the market over and over again in a day to buy materials.  Prepare for simmering by taking out all the pots in the kitchen.  They’re busy with vinegared food, steamed food, grilled fish and simmered food.  Since the family is also large, there are a lot of ingredients to prepare.  Of course, it was my childhood, so I wasn’t involved in it.  As I recall, it didn’t look as good as the osechi in supermarkets and department stores.  But they were delicious.  It’s a retrospective that many old people often do.

コンビニに行ってもスーパーに行ってもお節広告が満載です。どの広告を見ても実に美味しそう。ふと昔を思い出します。年末も25日を過ぎると、近所のあちこちから餅つきの音が聞こえてきます。餅つきが終わるとお節料理の準備です。１日に何度も何度も市場に行って材料の買い付け。台所中の鍋を総動員して煮付けの準備。酢の物、蒸し物、焼き魚に煮物、大忙しです。家族も大人数だから準備する食材も大量です。もちろん子供時代のことですから、自分が携わったわけではありません。思い出しても、スーパーやデパートのお節に比べたら、見た目には敵いません。でも美味しかったなあ。例に漏れない老人の呟きです。

The flower shop at the end of the year is extremely lively.  Poinsettia and cyclamen are lined up in a row.  Poinsettia is a flower that is lined up in stores until Christmas, as it is also called “Christmas flower”.  Cyclamen, on the other hand, have long-lasting flowers and continue to bloom until early spring, not to mention Christmas.  For that reason, cyclamen is used for farewell parties in Europe and is known as a flower that makes you imagine “farewell”.  Therefore, even in Japan, it is used as a perfect flower for celebrations such as graduation ceremonies and transfers.  Cyclamen is also known as “Kagaribibana” in Japanese, and the red cyclamen’s flower shape is reminiscent of a burning flame, so there is a flower word “jealousy” or there is a custom of avoiding presenting a cyclamen as a celebration of new construction.

年末の花屋さんは一際賑やかです。ポインセチアとシクラメンが所狭しと並んでいます。ポインセチアは別名「クリスマスフラワー」と言われるようにクリスマスまで店頭に並ぶ花。一方シクラメンは花持ちが良く、クリスマスの頃はもちろん春先まで咲き続けます。それ故にか、シクラメンは、ヨーロッパでは送別会などに用いられていて、「別れ」をイメージさせる花として知られています。そのため日本でも卒業式や転勤などのお祝いにはピッタリの花として利用されます。また、シクラメンは別名「カガリビバナ（葺火花）」ともいわれ、赤いシクラメンの花姿がメラメラと燃える炎を連想させることから、「嫉妬」と言う花言葉があったり、新築祝いにシクラメンを贈ることは避けるといった風習があります。

Stained glass is commonly used as a glass craft for lamp umbrellas.  However, in ancient times it was born as a light source for churches.  Even today, the stained glass of Sainte-Chapelle Church and Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France attracts many tourists from all over the world.  The stained glass that you see in the majestic place of the church also has a special meaning.  Especially at Christmas time, watching the stained glass that tells a religious story while listening to the mass that flows from the pipe organ makes me feel refreshed.  The photo was taken at the “Nasu Stained Glass Museum” in Nasu.

ステンドグラスは身近にはガラス工芸としてランプの傘などに使われています。しかし古くは教会の明かり取りとして生まれました。今でも、フランスパリのサントシャペル教会やノートルダム大聖堂のステンドグラスは世界中から多くの観光客を集めています。教会と言う荘厳の場所で目にするステンドグラスはまた格別な意味を持ちます。殊にクリスマスの折り、パイプオルガンから流れるミサ曲を聴きながら宗教物語を表すステンドグラスを眺めていると、自ずから心清められる思いがします。写真は那須の「那須ステンドグラス美術館」で撮ったものです。

Nowadays, if you go to the mountain section a little in the city, you can find restaurants and cafes made by remodeling old folk houses here and there.  Even if it looks like an old folk house, it is an ultra-modern cafe inside or it is a pure old folk house with a dirt floor and a hearth. It’s very unique.  At this time of year, a drinking party around the hearth is the most favorite. However, some people can’t drink it, while others say it’s bottomless. The theme of the topic is about health, about children and grandchildren. While doing this, the night was going deeper.

最近は、都会地も少し山手に入れば、古民家を改造してできたレストランやカフェがあちらこちらにあります。外見は古民家でも、中に入れば超モダンなカフェであったり、土間があり囲炉裏がある純古民家であったりで、とてもユニークです。この時期は何と言っても囲炉裏を囲んでの飲み会。と言っても飲めない人もいれば、飲めば底無しと言う人もいる。健康の話しであったり、子や孫の話しであったり、こうして年の暮れも夜が深けていきました。

Three cute Santas are climbing the rope ladder hanging on the vertebrate tree this year as well.  There are a few fallen leaves left, and I am walking along the chilly morning promenade with a happy mood.  Illuminations illuminate along the road at night to welcome people who are going home.  It’s a warm and hearty road.  It is my favorite road where foliage grow thick with leaves in the summer, leaves are completely dropped in the winter and shine warmly.

椎の木に掛かった縄梯子を今年も三人の可愛いサンタが登っています。落ち葉が僅かに残り、朝冷えのする朝の散歩道をルンルン気分で歩いています。夜には道沿いにイルミネーションが灯り、帰りの人達を迎えます。温かい心の通った道です。夏には鬱蒼と木の葉が生い茂り、冬はすっかり葉を落とし、暖かい日が燦々と降り注ぐ大好きな道です。

As I get older, I’m really worried about how fast the days go.  I would like to remember the events of this year.  However, my memory has declined significantly, and I have met with memories from a long time ago, and I feel like I’m dreaming.  When I think of an overnight dream, there are many stories that have no connection.  That’s because we dream when we’re in light sleep, “REM sleep,” which happens four or five times a night.  I have a different dream each time, but in the morning, when I remember the dream, it is reproduced as one story, so it is reproduced as a dream without a connection.  Memories of the elderly are remembered as such dream-like memories of the year.

歳を取ると月日の進む速さがやたら気になります。この一年の出来事をしっかり覚えておきたいと思います。とは思っても、記憶力の衰退は著しく、遥か昔の思い出と重なり会い、まるで夢を見ている様な状態です。一晩の夢を思い起こすと、脈絡のないストーリーが多いです。それは、夢を見るのは睡眠の浅い「レム睡眠」の時であり、その「レム睡眠」は一晩に4、5回の周期で起こる理由によります。一回一回は別の夢を見ているのですが、朝、夢を思い起こす時には一つのストーリーとして再現するから、脈絡のない夢として再現されます。年寄りの思い出は、一年の思い出もそんな夢のような思い出として、思い出されます。

The Omicron strain of coronavirus is rampant in Europe and other parts of the world.  However, although it is highly infectious, it seems that there are no more symptoms than ever before.  Vaccination has progressed considerably, and innate immunity has penetrated, so if we overcome this Omicron strain, the pandemic at the beginning of this century will end.  Next summer must be the usual summer free from coronavirus contamination.

コロナウイルスのオミクロン株がヨーロッパを始め世界各地で猛威を奮っています。しかし感染力は強いですが、症状としては今まで以上の事はない様です。ワクチン接種もかなり進み、自然免疫も浸透したでしょうから、このオミクロン株を克服すれば、今世紀初めのパンデミックは終息に向かうのではないでしょうか。来年の夏こそはコロナウイルスの汚染から解放されたいつもの夏を迎えられるに違いありません。

The rose garden has also been completely pruned, and there are still a few winter-blooming roses.  The park was almost deserted.  The cafe in the park is heated and has a faint baroque music.  It is a comfortable space.  Looking at the open garden where the blue sky spreads, I remembered the NHK drama “Lion Snack” that I saw in the summer.  Shizuku, who was sentenced to life expectancy at a young age, chose the hospice “Lion’s House” where she can see the sea in Setouchi as a place to spend her last days. Then, there she meet wonderful Madonna and friends in the same situation. It is such a work.   I decided to go home.

バラ園もすっかり剪定を終え、冬咲きのバラが僅かに残っています。人影は全くありません。園内のカフェは暖房が入り、微かにバロック風の音楽が流れています。心地よい空間です。青空が広がる開い園内を見ていると、夏に見たNHKのドラマ『ライオンのおやつ』をまた思い出しました。若くして余命宣告を受けた雫が、最後の日々を過ごす場所として瀬戸内の海が見えるホスピス「ライオンの家」を選び、そこで出会ったマドンナや同じ境遇の仲間たちの命の輝き、出会いの素晴らしさを描いた作品です。家に帰る事にしました。

The nearby park is full of Santa logs.  In the first place, the origin of Santa Claus is, “At one point, Bishop Nikolaus of Asia Minor during the Byzantine Empire learned of the existence of a family who had to sell his three daughters because of poverty. 近くの公園には、丸太のサンタが勢揃いです。そもそもサンタクロースの起源とは、「ある時、東ローマ帝国時代の小アジアの司教ニコラウスは、貧しさのあまり三人の娘を身売りしなければならなくなった家族の存在を知った。ニコラウスは真夜中にその家を訪れ、窓から金貨を投げ入れた。このとき暖炉には靴下が下げられていており、金貨はその靴下の中に入ったという。この金貨のおかげで家族は娘の身売りを避けられた」(Wikipedia)という逸話から生まれたそうです。この逸話が由来となり、「サンタクロースが夜中に煙突から家に入って、靴下の中にプレゼントを入れる」という今日におけるサンタクロースの伝承も生まれました。

If you search for “illuminations” on Google, you will find that there are illuminations all over Japan from Hokkaido in the north to Okinawa in the south.  Most of the places were canceled last year, but most of them are held this year even if there are various restrictions.  It was two years after the coronavirus, but finally the light began to appear.  I’m worried about the global spread of Omicron strains, but I’m sure we can overcome them next year.  However, it is a pity that the nearby Kobe Luminarie has been cancelled.

「イルミネーション」とGoogle で検索したら、あるはあるは、北は北海道から南の沖縄まで日本全国イルミネーションの花盛りです。昨年は中止している所が大半でしたが、今年は様々な制約があっても開催している所がほとんどです。コロナウイルスで明け暮れた２年間でしたが、やっと光が見え始めました。オミクロン株の世界的蔓延は気掛かりですが、来年はきっと克服出来ると思います。ただ、近くの神戸ルミナリエが中止になったのは残念です。
