In the evening, when I drop at a nearby temple, a spectacular Yamabuki is blooming in one corner of the precincts. The bright yellow and green leaves shine in the setting sun and are more vivid. Just at the time the bells telling at six ring out in the precincts. Involuntarily, I have thanked for the safety of the day today, and put my hands together in prayer to the setting sun.

夕方、近くのお寺に立ち寄ると、境内の片隅に見事な山吹が花を咲かせています。その山吹色と葉の緑が夕陽に映えていっそう鮮やかです。折しも暮れ六つの鐘が境内に鳴り渡り、思わず、今日の無事息災に感謝して、夕陽に手を合わせました。

紀州和歌山県岩出市にある名刹根来寺の桜が舞い始めました。 境内の聖天池にも散った桜がいちめんに広がり、池の傍に立つ聖天堂(行者堂)が桜と共に水面に映っています。コロナウイルスの影響でお花見客は少ないですが、折節の変わる景色は今年も変わりません。

As I was walking along the path, wild strawberry flowers were blooming in the grass. I suddenly remembered that old day. 野道を歩いていると、草むらに野いちごの花が咲いていました。ふと思い出したのは昔のあの日。近所の子らと隠れん坊をしていて、隠れたのは草むら。背丈ほどの草むらをかき分けていると、目の前に真っ赤に熟した野イチゴの実が固まってあります。思わず二つ三つ口に頬ばると、酸っぱいのなんの。涙が出そうになったことを思い出しました。

木に囲まれた里道を歩いていると、陽だまりに一輪草がポツンとさいていました。その名の通り、茎の先端に一輪だけ花を付けています。そう言えば、この花には、とてもロマンチックな伝説があります。大昔、はるか下界の地上を眺めているうちに眠くなった星が地上に落ちて一輪の花になったのが一輪草だと言うのです。花言葉の「追憶」の由来かもしれません。

桜が散り始める頃、今度は花水木が咲き始めます。花水木は、日本人が桜を愛でると同じ様に、アメリカ人が愛でる花です。日本における植栽は、1912年に当時の東京市長であった尾崎行雄がアメリカのワシントンD.C.へ桜(ソメイヨシノ)を贈っ際、1915年にその返礼として贈られたのが始まです。だから、花水木が日本に根付いてからまだ100年位の歴史しかありません。京都嵯峨野の二尊院には紅白の立派な花水木が植えられていますが、今では日本の至る所で見かけます。花水木の並木道も沢山あり、多くの人の心を癒します。

April 8 is the day of the “Flower Festival” today. It’s the birthday of Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. We Japanese celebrate this day regardless of religion. It is customary to celebrate by applying sweet tea to a small Buddha statue in connection with the fact that when the Buddha was born, he used pure perfume to purify himself. 今日４月８日は「花祭り」の日です。仏教の開祖である釈迦の誕生日で、日本では宗派を問わずお祝いします。釈迦が生まれた時香水をかけて身を清めたことにちなみ、小さな釈迦像に甘茶をかけて祝う習慣があります。どの寺の境内にも春の花々が咲き乱れ、心安らかな一日になります。

桜が散り始めました。 これとは対照的に、コロナウイルスは世界でますます猛威を奮っています。 その影響で、全国の桜の名所はどことも花見客は激減し、今年は寂しいお花見シーズンとなりました。 この状況がいつまで続くかは予断をゆるしませんが、人類の叡智と団結力を最大限に発揮して戦わねばなりません。 人類が勝つか、ウィルスが勝つか、これは世紀の最大の戦争です。

ネモフィラは、森の妖精のように澄んだ青い花を持ち、春の花壇やコンテナ植えによく使用される人気の花です。 日本にはあちこちに大規模なネモフィラ公園もあり、大勢の人達が押し寄せているほどです。 一方、海棠(かいどう)は桜と同じく日本を代表する春の花ですが、その名前を知る人はほとんどいません。 海棠は、中国を代表する美人である楊貴妃に例えられるほど、高貴で美しい花です。

Many children play in the nearby park despite the weekday. It’s because the school is closed due to the coronavirus. On the other hand, the camellia flowers blooming beside the promenade are starting to scatter in a warm sunny day. Dandelions bloom on the ground, and many camellia flowers fall down also around it. It’s like passing the baton to the next season.

平日にもかかわらず、多くの子供たちが近くの公園で遊んでいます。 コロナウイルス感染防止の為学校が閉鎖されているからです。 一方、遊歩道では、ツバキがどんどん花を落とし始めました。 地面にはタンポポが咲き、その周りにもたくさんの椿の花が落ちています。 まるで季節を繋ぐ命のバトンタッチの様です。

Camellia flowers fall down with one whole flower. On the other hand, the flower of sasanqua falls every petal. 今日（4/4）は近くの公園の椿が青い草の上一面に散り落ちていました。 落ちた椿は生き生きとしていて、まるで椿が地面に置いた鏡に映っているかのように見えました。
