“Toi Sakura” which is said to be the earliest bloom in Japan, is a cherry blossom that blooms only in the Toi Onsen area of Nishiizu. The blossoms bloom earlier than Kawazu Sakura, buds begin to sprout from mid-December, bloom from mid-January and continue to bloom for about two months until mid-February.
土肥桜は西伊豆の土肥温泉周辺にだけ咲く桜で、早咲きで有名な河津桜より1週間早く咲き始めると言われています。沖縄の開花期とほぼ同じ時期です。北海道大学の故小川義雄氏が西伊豆に医院で見付け品種改良されて生まれました。
Yukiwariso, snow-breaking grass, that always sprout from the snow is blooming this winter without waiting for the snow. It’s a flower that tells coming spring, but every time I see this flower, I feel lonely and recall the past and get likely to spill tears.
いつもなら薄く積もった雪を割って芽を出し始める雪割草ですが、今年は雪も降らず、芽どころか花まで咲かせています。春を告げる花ですが、いつ見ても寂し気で、この花を見るたびに昔のことが思い出され、涙がこぼれそうになります。

クリスマスローズは多種多様で、その中の一種がクリスマスに開花することから付いた名前です。多くは１月中旬から春先にかけて咲き続けます。BC５５０年の第一次神聖戦争で今でいう化学兵器の原料にもなったということでも知られている毒性の強い花です。種でしか増やしにくく、同じ種の花でも姿、形が様々なオンリーワンの花で、それに魅せられた愛好家も沢山います。冬の茶室によく見かける花もクリスマスローズですから茶室も和洋折衷です。
Red and white turnips dug out of frozen soil are very juicy and delicious. I love turnips sliced thinly and pickled in sweet vinegar. When simmered, it softens to melt and is also delicious. Turnip is also an indispensable a la carte for winter cooking.
冬の大根も美味しいですが、蕪もまた格別です。柔らくてとてもジューシー。特に薄くスライスして甘酢に漬けた酢の物はご飯にも合いますし、茶菓子（？）としても一品です。ちなみに、蕪を「かぶら」というのは関西で、これが元々の呼び名だったようですが、関東方言で「かぶ」と言っていたのが、今はこれが標準語。「かぶら」は関西方言ということになっています。
“Mogari” is a fence made of a combination of bamboo. When a strong winter wind blows onto such fences, bamboo fences, electric wires, etc., it makes a whistle-like sound. “Mogaribue” is a word that describes that sound.
冬の冷たくて強い風を表わす言葉は沢山あります。その中でも最も厳しくて最も美しい言葉が「虎落笛」です。「虎落」とは竹で編んだフェンスのことで、強い風が吹くとヒューヒューとまるで笛を吹くように聞こえます。虎落だけでなく、街中でも電線に強い風が吹いても聞こえます。このような音を形容したのが「虎落笛」です。満開の山茶花がこの虎落笛に舞い落ちた朝です。
I will never forget. On January 15, 1915, the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake killed 6,434 people. I lived in Ikoma City, Nara Pre. at the time, and woke up with the violent tremors and the squeaking noise of the house. I had a job in Hanshin, but I couldn’t finally go that day. Ice tulips are at their best at the New York Lamp Museum & Flower Garden in Futo, Ito. The colorful 3,600 flowers tell us that spring is coming soon. The ice tulip is refrigerated and exposed to cold (winter) for a certain period of time, so that the flowering is adjusted to bloom in winter.

I had a letter from a friend of Izu in Shizuoka prefecture that Kawazu cherry blossoms had bloomed.In Osaka, the first snow and first ice were observed 17 days later than usual. That’s the degree most people aren’t even aware of. It may be that the real winter does not come as it is.
河津桜は日本一早く咲く早咲き桜として有名です。それにしても小正月もまだ終わっていないこの時期の開花は早すぎます。今年は大阪も東京も初雪、初氷が例年よりも2週間以上遅れて観測されました。冬温かいのは有り難いですが、地球温暖化の影響ではないかと思うともろ手を挙げて喜んでいるわけにはいきません。
We have the tradition to say that the three days from January 14 are called petit New Year’s Days, and to be reluctant to leave the New Year. And we celebrates the 20-year-old youth on 15th day, Adults’ Day, in the central day. The day is uncertain now. Dondoyaki, Festivals Fire, is one of the events during that period.
小正月は１月15日の行事ですが、14日から16日の期間をそう呼ぶこともあります。鏡割りと言って、正月に飾った鏡餅を細かく割って焼き、小豆粥に入れて食べる習慣がありました。また15日は成人の日で20歳に達した青年たちをお祝いする日ですが、今は１月の第２月曜日に定めらています。どんど焼きは、左義長といって小正月に催される火祭りのことで、地方により様々な呼び方があります。
