The number of people infected with corona in Tokyo has exceeded 900 again.  The damage caused by the debris flow in Atami is reported every day, and the damage caused by heavy rain is occurring here and there.  The public opinion is divided into two, whether or not the Olympic Games will be held in such a situation.  The appearance of athletes from around the world competing in competition is very moving and may give courage in this difficulty.  However, the political aspirations behind it and the greedy IOC led by the chairman, who is ridiculed as a “rip-off baron,” diminishe our emotions and courage.  The purpose of the Modern Olympic Charter is to “use sports for the harmonious development of humankind in order to promote a peaceful society that emphasizes the maintenance of human dignity.”  The current Olympics seem to forget this spirit.

東京のコロナ感染者がまた900人を超えました。熱海の土石流による被害が連日報道され、大雨による被害があちらこちらに起こっています。そんな中のオリンピック大会開催が是が非か、国論は真っ二つに分かれています。世界のアスリート達が競技を競い合う姿には多くの感動を呼び、この困難の中に勇気を与えるかもしれません。しかしその背後に蠢く政治的な思惑や「ぼったくり男爵」と揶揄される会長が率いる強欲なIOCのことを考えると、その感動も勇気も萎えてしまいます。近代オリンピック憲章の目的に「人間の尊厳の保持に重きを置く平和な社会の推進を目指すために、人類の調和のとれた発展にスポーツを役立てること」と謳われています。今のオリンピックはこの精神を忘れているようです。
