Bougainvillea is a popular tropical flower alongside hibiscus. Bougainville, a French botanist, mathematician and military man, discovered the original species of Bougainvillea in Brazil when he was ordered to build a colony by Louis XV between 1766 and 1769 and commanded France’s first circumnavigation of the world. Bougainvillea is named after that name.  Bougainville Island in the South Seas, which became a fierce battlefield in World War II and the Commander-in-Chief of the Japanese Combined Fleet was killed, is also an island named after Bougainville, where bougainvillea blooms all year round.  Bougainvillea is a flower with bright colors and a tropical atmosphere, and it was introduced to Japan in the middle of the Meiji era, but due to its relatively cold resistance, it has now spread not only to Okinawa but also to Hokkaido.  The part of Bougainvillea that looks like a colorful flower is not a petal but a bract, and there are three small tubular flowers in it.  The colorful bracts are said to attract hummingbirds.

ハイビスカスと並ぶトロピカルフラワーとして人気のブーゲンビリア。フランスの植物学者で数学者そして軍人のブーガンヴィルが、1766年―1769年にルイ15世から植民地建設の命を受け、フランス最初の世界周航を指揮した時、ブラジルでハイビスカスの原種を発見し、その名にちなんで付けられたのがブーゲンビリアです。今次大戦で激戦地になり、日本の聯合艦隊の司令長官が戦死した南太平洋のブーゲンビル島もブーガンヴィルにちなんで付けられた島で、ここにはブーゲンビリアが年中咲いています。ブーゲンビリアは鮮やかな色彩で南国の雰囲気を持つ花で、日本には明治中期に移入されましたが、比較的寒さにも強いこともあって、今では沖縄はもちろん北海道までも広がりました。ブーゲンビリアの色鮮やかな花のように見える部分は花びらではなく苞葉（ほうよう）で、その中に筒状の小さな花3つが存在します。色鮮やかな苞葉はハチドリを引きつけるためだといわれています。
