Taisanboku(Magnolia magnolia) is written in Chinese characters as “泰山木” or “大山木”, and the flowers are oriental style, so I have thought that their home is in China, but they are actually from North America.  It is an evergreen tree of the Magnolia family with a tree height of up to 20 m and a flower diameter of 20 cm or more.  It came to Japan in 1873 (Meiji 6), and it spread rapidly in fitting in the climate.  It is the same group as Mokuten and Kobushi, and among the Magnolia genus that has continued since early spring, large, pure white fragrant flowers bloom from June to July, which is the latest.  The contrast between the white of the flowers and the dark green of the evergreen and shiny leaves is very beautiful.  Its scent is known as “magnolia” and is widely used as a raw material for perfumes and cosmetics.  In addition, magnolia wreaths and magnolia balls that are sold around Christmas time are made from the leaves of this Taisanboku.

タイサンボクは漢字では「泰山木」とか「大山木」とか書き、花の姿も東洋風なので、てっきり中国産かと思っていたら、実は北アメリカが原産だそうです。樹高は20mにも達し、花の直径は20cm以上はあるモクレン科の常緑高木です。日本に渡来したのは１８７３年（明治６年）で、気候風土に合い急速に普及しました。モクレンやコブシなどと同じ仲間で、早春から続くモクレン属のうち、こんなにもと思うほど遅い6月から7月に、大輪で純白の香りのよい花を咲かせます。花の白と、常緑で光沢のある葉の深緑色との対比は非常に美しいものです。その香りは「マグノリア」として知られ、香水の原料や化粧品に広く利用されています。また、クリスマスの時期になると出回るマグノリアのリースやマグノリアボールなどは、このタイサンボクの葉を使って作られています。
