The origin of Mokuren is said to be Yunnan and Sichuan in southwestern China.  The English name of Mokuren is magnolia, and it is difficult to identify the place of origin because it exists all over the world.  Also, this “magnolia” is also a general term for Mokuren, Kobushi, and Taisanboku.  If you want to identify Mokuren, you have to say Japanese magnolia.  In general, the names of plants and fish are rough word in the West, and each one in Japan and China has a clear name.  Academically, Linnaeus, the “father of taxonomy,” systematized plants and gave them names, but they are just scientific names, which are basically Greek, so they are not familiar to the general public.  My claim is that the names of plants and animals should be in Japanese as the world standard.

モクレンの原産地は中国西南部の雲南省、四川省とされています。モクレンの英名はmagnolia で、世界各地に存在しますから、原産地の特定は難しいわけです。また、このmagnolia もモクレン、コブシ、タイサンボクの総称でかなり大雑把です。モクレンを特定しようとすれば、Japanese magnolia と言わねばなりません。一般的に植物の名や魚介類の名は、西洋は大雑把で、日本や中国では一つ一つに名があり、明確な違いがあります。学問的には「分類学の父」リンネが植物を体系化し、植物の名を付けましたが、あくまでも学名で、それも基本はギリシャ語ですから、一般人には馴染めません。植物や動物の名前は日本語を世界標準にすべきだと言うのがわたしの主張です。
