Today is “Shoukan(little cold)”.  This day is also called “the beginning of the cold”, and it is said that the cold will become severer toward the “great cold” (around January 20).  Approximately 30 days from this day to “Setsubun” ( “Risshun(the first day of the spring)” around February 4th) is called “Kan(cold days)” or “kan-no-iri(during the cold days)”.  It is from this day that we will issue the letters of the “sympathy during the cold”.  After this period, it’s finally spring.  In this way, from ancient times, the words that divide the seasons have been used to call attention, share joy, and encourage each other.  Japan is a country with clear four seasons, which is rare in the world.  That creates the characteristics of Japan and the Japanese.

今日は「小寒」です。この日は「寒の入り」とも言い、これから「大寒」（1月20日頃）に向かい寒さが厳しくなるとされています。この日から「節分」(2月4日頃の「立春」の前日）までの約30日間を「寒（かん）」または「寒中」「寒の内」といいます。「寒中見舞い」を出すのもこの日からです。この期間が過ぎればいよいよ春と言うことですね。こうして昔から一年の内に区切り区切りを設けて、注意を喚起したり、喜びを分かち合ったり、励まし合ったりしてきた訳ですね。日本は世界でも稀にみる四季の明確な国です。それが日本のそして日本人の特質を生み出しています。
