I’ve always been wondering when Yasunari Kawabata’s “Izu no Odoriko (The Izu Dancer)” was set in the season.  A young man who travels alone to Izu to escape from loneliness and melancholy becomes a companion with a troupe of traveling entertainers who cross Shuzenji, Yugashima, and Amagi Pass to Yugano and Shimoda, and have a faint love for the dancer girl. It is a story of travel and sorrow.  According to records, Yasunari first traveled on the Shimoda Highway in the fall. If the experience at that time resulted in “Izu no Odoko”, the season would be autumn. However, Yasunari often travels to Izu after that, so the stage of “Izu no Odoriko” may be spring. Rather, I feel that it is more suitable for this story.

川端康成の「伊豆の踊子」の舞台になった季節はいつだったのか、前から気になっていました。「伊豆の踊子」は、孤独や憂鬱な気分から逃れるため伊豆へ一人旅に出た青年が、修善寺、湯ヶ島、天城峠を越え湯ヶ野、下田に向かう旅芸人一座と道連れとなり、踊子の少女に淡い恋心を抱く旅情と哀歓の物語です。 記録によれば、康成が初めて下田街道を旅したのは秋です。その時の体験が「伊豆の踊子」に結実したのであれば、季節は秋と言うことになります。しかし、康成はその後もしばしば伊豆を旅行していますので、「伊豆の踊子」の舞台は春でもよいわけです。むしろその方がこの物語に相応しい様な気がします。
