The traditional event “Hina no Tsurushi Ornament Festival” in the Inatori district of Higashiizu Town, Shizuoka Prefecture will be held from January 20th to March 31st.  The tsurushi kazari prays for the health and happiness of the girl, and the lucky charms and dolls are handmade with all our heart and hung on the thread.  It seems that it has been going on since the Edo period, but eventually it can only be seen in some households.  In recent years, as part of the town revitalization, this tsurushi kazari has become established as an event in the hot spring town, and this year marks the 25th time.  Along with “Sagemon” in Yanagawa, Fukuoka Prefecture and “Kasafuku” in Sakata, Yamagata Prefecture, it is considered to be one of Japan’s three major tsurushi kazari.  During the festival, the stone steps of the Shinto shrine in the area are transformed into a tiered stand for dolls (which are displayed for the Girl’s [Doll’s] Festival).  The 118 steps are said to be the best hina tiered stand in Japan.  The appearance of about 1,000 Hina dolls and 10 pairs of tsurushi kazari is truly a masterpiece.
